What is community solar?

Community Solar is a state-regulated program operating since 2019, that allows New Jersey residents to get a free share of a local solar farm to generate energy on their behalf.

This way, if you can't or don't want to install panels on your roof, you can still save some money and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It makes clean energy available to the 80% of residents who, for different reasons, cannot install panels on their roof.

1

Step 1

Find a Solar Farm.

Start with the form above to subscribe. Make sure you have your utility bill handy. Add your contact info, account info, authorize the agreement and add a payment method on file.

2

Step 2

Get your share.

Once you submit your subscription we will reach out to the utility to get your historical energy usage and will assign you a share of a local solar farm based on that info.

3

Step 3

Start saving.

The utility pays you for the energy generated by your share every month with credits on your bill. Then, you pay for those credits to us with a 20% discount, saving you money every month.

"Excellent service, lowers my energy bill 10%, and supports clean energy! My experience has been great so far. Easy to set it up (via their website). I did a ton of research on this before I signed up, and I personally recommend it." Michael R.
"I have found Neighborhood Sun to be an easy way to get my electricity at a lower cost and to support the move toward more alternative energy vs fossil fuels." Ned T.
"Excellent team and such an easy way to save on your energy bill while at the same time getting your power from the sun. No investment in home equipment, no installation on your home and very low risk. I am not sure why everyone hasn't jumped on this incredible opportunity." Peter M.
"I'm so grateful for Neighborhood Sun which has made it possible for me to switch to 100% solar when it didn't make sense to put panels on my shady roof. Neighborhood Sun staff are a great team and it shows - hard working, clear communicators when following up with questions and issues." Mimi M.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the catch?

No catch! These are state-regulated programs and our mission is to make the benefits of solar power available to everyone.  There are no fees to join, no fees to cancel with notice given, no change in how you get your electricity, and no contract or rate surprises—if you don’t like the service, you can cancel at any time.

How does it save me money?

Your share of the solar farm earns you energy credits when it generates power. You’ll pay us (Neighborhood Sun) for the credits you received the previous month with a 20% discount. For example, if your average monthly bill to the utility is $100, you should receive credits for up to $90. The following month, you'll receive an invoice from us to pay for those credits, but you pay with a 20% discount. So, you end up paying $72 for the $90 in credits you received on your bill previously. Saving you $18 that month!

Am I eligible for community solar?

Yes! As long as there is a solar farm in your electric utility territory, and you receive a utility bill in your name, you can enroll!

How does this work if it doesn't cost anything extra?

Harnessing energy from the sun is much cheaper than fracking for fossil fuels, and community solar is financially supported by state programs.

You pay Neighborhood sun for the credit applied to your bill at the discounted rate your local solar farm offers. This payment is made about one to two months after you have received your solar energy credits, so you are always ahead of the game and you only pay for what you have already used.

This is 100% local energy – not coming from a state on the other side of the country. Your Energy is made HERE and supports green jobs HERE.
